Egypt’s Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said Egypt is keen on addressing the issue of bird migration and biodiversity at the 2022 UN climate conference, COP27, which will be held in Sharm El Sheikh next month.

She added this key issue affirms the importance of achieving balance between the Convention on Biological Diversity and the national plan for dealing with the effects of climate change and reducing emissions.

Fouad’s comments came during a speech that she delivered at the inauguration of a regional conference organized by BirdLife International in co-operation with the Environment Ministry’s Migratory Soaring Birds project.

The conference is held under the theme “Towards Safe Paths .. Birds and the Energy Sector”, and runs from October 8 to 10.

It aims to strengthen partnership and understanding between the energy sector and nature conservation organizations regarding birds conservation across the Eurasian-African flyway.

The environment minister asserted that her ministry organized several training courses for those who are specialized in monitoring and watching migratory birds, citing the erection of a bird watching point in Sharm El Sheikh as one of the attractions listed in tourism programs.

She explained that Egypt took measures on the protection of migratory soaring birds, which include preparing an integrated waste system to protect birds in their flyways, introducing measures to protect birds from being hunted, working to promote bird conservation and building a culture of bird watching as one of the eco-tourism programs, as well as developing a tourism product based on watching migratory birds in the Red Sea.
