Egypt’s Minister of Transport Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel El-Wazir and the Japanese Ambassador in Cairo Fumio Iwai reviewed on Tuesday the progress of the joint transport projects, and discussed means of expanding future co-operation.

The meeting focused on the first phase of the Cairo Metro Line 4, which will run 19 km from 6 October City to Fustat, through 17 stations.

Japan’s Mitsubishi is carrying out electromechanical and workshop works and supplying 23 trains for the project.

The two sides also discussed the second phase, linking Fustat with New Cairo, and efforts to finalise tender documents for its systems and rolling stock. The third and fourth phases are also under study.

El-Wazir and Iwai reviewed Japan’s support for training and capacity building in areas including intelligent transport systems, urban transport planning, railway management, infrastructure projects and port operations.

A total of 48 Egyptians had completed training programmes by the end of 2025, with the number expected to reach 70 by the end of 2026.

Minister El-Wazir stressed the importance of expanding training opportunities for Egyptian engineers and young professionals in Japan to facilitate the transfer of Japanese expertise and technology.

The meeting also explored greater Japanese private-sector investment in Egypt’s transport sector as part of efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
