Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty discussed in a phone call with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Tuesday ways to strengthen the existing co-operation between Egypt and the agency.

The two sides also reviewed preparations for the IAEA General Conference, scheduled to be held in mid-September, and the latest regional developments, including the Iranian nuclear issue.

During the call, Minister Abdelatty expressed his appreciation for the close and ongoing co-operation between Egypt and the IAEA.

The foreign minister praised the technical support provided by the agency to Egypt, which contributes to the development of its peaceful nuclear programme.

He noted that the programme has witnessed unprecedented progress in recent years, in addition to enhancing national capabilities in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy and benefiting from the expertise and Egyptian personnel working within the agency.

For his part, the IAEA Director General referred to his recent visit to the city of El Alamein and his participation in the ceremony marking the installation of the reactor pressure vessel for the second nuclear unit of El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project.

He praised the close co-operation between Egypt and the agency, as well as the progress made in implementing the El Dabaa project, which is one of the largest peaceful nuclear energy projects in Africa.

Grossi also praised the level of regular and ongoing coordination and communication between the two sides regarding the El Dabaa project, expressing his appreciation for Egypt’s efforts in this regard.
