The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted on Wednesday the 5th meeting of the Consultative Mechanism to Enhance Coordination of Peace Efforts in Sudan, chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, with broad participation from delegations of countries and regional and international organizations.

Key attendees included UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan Ramadhane Lamamra, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti Abdulkader Hussein Omar, Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan and Saudi Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Al Khuriji.

Also representatives from Germany, Turkey, Norway, Qatar, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, France, Iraq, Angola as well as the European Union, the Arab League, the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) participated.

The meeting comes as part of intensified international and regional efforts to address the severe challenges arising from Sudan’s delicate regional situation.

During his speech, Abdelatty asserted that the Sudanese crisis requires united, sincere international and regional efforts to swiftly halt the bloodshed, stressing the critical nature of the current phase and its serious implications for regional peace and security, particularly for neighboring countries, the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

The minister referred to the presidential statement issued on December 18, which clearly outlined Egypt’s core position and red lines, including the preservation of Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, rejection of any secessionist attempts and protection of Sudanese state institutions.

He said that Egypt is committed to achieve peace and stability in Sudan, adding that this was reflected in the launch of the Sudan Neighboring Countries Initiative in July 2023, which emphasized the need for a ceasefire, the commencement of inclusive political consultations and the guaranteed delivery of humanitarian aid.

Egypt has actively participated in several tracks, including the International Quartet and the African Union’s expanded mechanism.

The minister asserted the importance of continuing work within the framework of the International Quartet to reach a comprehensive humanitarian truce, leading to a sustainable ceasefire, alongside the launch of a comprehensive, Sudanese-owned political process.

He highlighted Cairo’s hosting of Sudanese political and civil forces under the “Cairo Dialogue I” in July 2024.

Abdelatty underlined that ending the ongoing violence requires an immediate humanitarian truce, followed by a sustainable ceasefire and the initiation of a comprehensive political process that preserves Sudanese state institutions and prevents the formation of parallel entities.

He reiterated Egypt’s full solidarity with Sudan and called on the international community and donors to fulfill their humanitarian commitments amid the worsening humanitarian situation in the country.
