CAIRO – Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry will head for New York on Saturday to take part in the high-level segment meetings of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, to kick off Monday.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said this session, titled “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity”, is of special importance as it seeks to foster joint action to achieve the 2030 Agenda and sustainable development goals to bring about peace and development for everyone, especially in light of the multiple global challenges that adversely affect efforts to achieve these goals.
The spokesman said Shoukry will take part in several high-level events during his New York visit, including delivering Egypt’s word at the UNGA on September 23.
He will take part in the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), also known as the SDG Summit, and in the Climate Ambition Summit.
He will preside over the ministerial meeting on damage and losses as well as the Global Counterterrorism Forum.
The foreign minister, the spokesman said, will hold meetings of an important economic nature aimed at attracting investments to Egypt and introducing the measures taken by the government to encourage foreign investment as he will address the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) and the American Council on Foreign Relations and meet with officials of the World Economic Forum.
Shoukry is expected to participate in a number of important ministerial meetings to discuss the most prominent international and regional issues that represent a priority for Egypt, most notably the ministerial preparatory meeting for the Summit for the Future, coordinating meeting of Arab foreign ministers, and the ministerial meeting of Sudan’s neighboring countries, as well as the ministerial meeting to support the humanitarian response in Sudan which is organized by Egypt in cooperation with a number of international partners.
He will also participate in the Conference of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Ministerial Meeting of the Peacebuilding Committee, the Tripartite Meeting grouping Egypt, Cyprus and Greece and the Palestinian Aid Coordination Committee (AHLC) meeting, in addition to the European-Arab Ministerial Meeting to encourage the revival of the peace process.
He will also take part in the meetings of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the tripartite mechanism meeting grouping Egypt, Iraq and Jordan.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman said Shoukry agenda will also include many bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and heads of participating delegations, in addition to meetings with American, European, Asian, and Arab media outlets.
