Egypt’s Fund for Drug Control and Treatment of Addiction has screened 915 school bus drivers across several governorates during the first week of the 2026/2027 school year.
Three drivers were referred to the Public Prosecution on charges of driving under the influence after their tests were positive.
The screening operations were conducted in co-operation with the General Administration for Drug Control, the General Traffic Department, the Central Administration of the General Secretariat for Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, and the Central Administration for Security at the Ministry of Education.
The fund said the campaigns will continue throughout the school year and will be expanded to various governorates, including on-site drug testing at schools.
The fund urged families and guardians to report any suspicions regarding drug use by school bus drivers through its hotline, 16023.
Surprise, immediate and confidential inspection campaigns will be dispatched to test drivers following reports.
