Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Ambassador Amr el-Sherbiny reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening co-operation and coordination with the European Union on multilateral issues and supporting efforts aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the international system and the role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges.

These remarks came during a consultation session held at the ministry headquarters in the New Administrative Capital between Egypt and the European Union on multilateral issues.

The session was co-chaired by Ambassador Amr el-Sherbiny and Director-General for Multilateral Relations, Human Rights and Democracy and Deputy Political Director at the European External Action Service Ambassador Martin Belle-Hermann.

The consultations reviewed a number of issues currently under discussion within the framework of the United Nations and other international organisations and bodies, including initiatives related to United Nations reform, the reform and expansion of the Security Council and disarmament issues.

The two sides also exchanged views on developments concerning United Nations peacekeeping operations and peacebuilding efforts.

In this respect, the European side commended Egypt’s role in facilitating the 2025 Comprehensive Peacebuilding Review, which culminated in the adoption of the joint resolution by the Security Council and the General Assembly on the review process.

Discussions further addressed issues related to UNESCO, with the European side reiterating its congratulations to Egypt on the election of Director-General of UNESCO Khaled El-Enani.

Both parties underlined the importance of continued coordination to strengthen UNESCO’s role and enable the organisation to continue its mission of preserving human heritage.

Both parties also stressed the importance of preserving the intergovernmental nature of the organisation and ensuring that member states retain ownership and leadership of international initiatives and efforts.
