Egypt and Djibouti have agreed to deepen tourism ties, including through training, investment and heritage preservation, and are considering a twinning arrangement between Sharm El-Sheikh and Djibouti City.

Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy and Djibouti’s Trade and Tourism Minister Orbis Helaf Orbis signed a memorandum of understanding during talks in Cairo on Tuesday, Egypt’s tourism ministry said.

The agreement covers tourism promotion and marketing, investment in tourism activities, and training in tourism and hotel management.

The two sides also agreed to appoint liaison officials to follow up on its implementation.

Their discussions included co-operation on managing hotels and archaeological sites, establishing and running museums, restoring antiquities and carrying out archaeological excavations, the ministry said.

The proposed twinning of Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt’s Red Sea resort, with Djibouti’s capital would provide an opportunity to share expertise and develop co-operation, it added.

Orbis said he hoped to boost tourism between the two countries. Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, operates three flights a week to Djibouti.
