Egypt is stepping up efforts to boost energy storage capacity as part of its transition towards renewable energy, including the development of a major pumped-hydro storage project in El-Tor, South Sinai.
Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat and representatives of Renergy Group Partners, Green Tech Egypt and OAK Holdings reviewed on Sunday progress on an integrated renewable energy project in Sinai.
The project combines solar power plants with pumped-hydro storage and advanced battery systems, with a planned total capacity of 3,100 MW to be developed in two phases.
Esmat stressed that expanding renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels are central to Egypt’s energy transition. He said pumped-hydro and battery storage projects are vital to strengthening the national grid, ensuring its stability and securing a sustainable electricity supply.
The meeting reviewed feasibility studies, investment requirements, local-content ratios and technical options for connecting the project to the national grid.
Esmat highlighted Sinai’s geographical advantages for water pumping and storage, stressing that the project would help maximise the region’s natural resources to generate clean electricity.
He commended the role of local and international partners in advancing Egypt’s clean energy strategy, saying such projects would strengthen the country’s position as a regional leader in sustainable power.
