Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, took part, on Sunday, in a ministerial meeting of the Tripartite Neighbouring Countries Mechanism on Libya, held in Algeria with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti.
The meeting aimed to further boost co-ordination among the three countries, as well as reviewing developments in Libya and prospects for resolving the crisis.
According to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nader Zaki, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s position on preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He also stressed that Libya’s security is an integral part of Egypt’s and the Arab world’s national security.
Abdelatty rejected all forms of foreign interference and underlined that a Libyan-led solution was essential to achieving lasting stability.
He called for a comprehensive political settlement that preserves Libya’s unity, unifies its institutions and paves the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
The Egyptian chief diplomat called for the immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces, mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya, in line with relevant international resolutions.
In a joint statement, the three ministers reaffirmed their support for UN efforts to facilitate free and fair simultaneous elections under an agreed constitutional and legal framework, bringing an end to the prolonged transitional period and establishing unified, legitimate state institutions.
They also stressed the need to co-ordinate regional and international efforts in support of an inclusive political process facilitated by the UN Support Mission in Libya, while ensuring Libyan ownership of the settlement.
The ministers also called for national reconciliation, the unification of military and security institutions, and the preservation of Libya’s resources and frozen assets abroad.
They urged Libyan parties to take further steps to implement the 2026 unified spending framework.
The three countries agreed to continue coordination in regional and international organisations and to hold their next tripartite meeting in Tunisia on a date to be agreed later.
