Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar held a video-conference meeting with Head of Spain’s Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre in Barcelona, Professor Rafael I. Barraquer, discussed expanding co-operation and follow up on plans to establish a branch of the renowned eye centre in Egypt.
Minister Abdel Ghaffar lauded the ongoing co-operation between the two sides, which reflects their shared commitment to advancing ophthalmic care and surgery in line with international standards, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
He also invited the Spanish specialist to participate in the Population, Health and Development Conference (PHDC 2026).
The project enjoys direct support from Egypt’s political leadership, the minister said, and stressed the strategic importance of establishing a Barraquer branch in Egypt to strengthen specialised healthcare services and localise global expertise.
The meeting reviewed progress made since the signing of a memorandum of understanding and discussed the operational model, technical requirements and next steps needed to ensure the highest standards of quality and efficiency, Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar.
The two sides also agreed to expand cooperation in medical training, scientific research, knowledge transfer and capacity building, including hosting centre experts in Egypt and organising joint scientific and educational activities to enhance the skills of Egyptian medical professionals.
Several ministry officials attended the virtual discussions.
