Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to expanding the use of clean energy across national development projects.

The government continues to accelerate its green transition through strategic partnerships with the private sector to enhance the competitiveness of Egyptian ports, industrial zones, and the national economy.

Madbouli made the remarks following witnessing the signing of two agreements at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Capital between the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the SCZone Infrastructure Company, an affiliate of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), and Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT).

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat and SCZone Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien attended the event.

The agreements represent another step in Egypt’s strategy to integrate renewable energy into major industrial and logistics projects, while supporting the country’s broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Under the first agreement, the NREA and the SCZone Infrastructure Company will co-operate to utilise the company’s electricity distribution network to transmit renewable electricity generated by NREA-owned power plants. The electricity will be delivered through the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Network before being distributed via the SCZone Infrastructure Company’s network to contracted consumers operating within the economic zone.

The second agreement establishes a one-year renewable electricity purchase arrangement between the NREA and SCCT. Under the agreement, electricity generated by NREA’s renewable energy plants will supply the terminal’s operations under the SCCT One-Year Power Purchase Agreement, enabling the company to meet its electricity needs through clean energy while supporting its carbon reduction targets and environmental sustainability initiatives at East Port Said Port.

Madbouli said the agreements represent a successful model of co-operation between government institutions and the private sector in implementing Egypt’s green transition agenda. He noted that expanding the use of renewable energy will improve the efficiency of ports and industrial zones, strengthen the competitiveness of Egyptian exports, and reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional hub for sustainable investment and logistics.

On the sidelines of the signing ceremony, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said the ministry’s strategy is centred on supporting industrial localisation and the adoption of advanced technologies, in line with presidential directives to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy projects, particularly in solar and wind power.

For his part, SCZone Chairman Waleid Gamal El-Dien affirmed that the SCZone is committed to providing an integrated investment environment that enables businesses to adopt international best practices in clean energy and operational efficiency.

He stressed that the SCZone continues to modernise its ports and industrial zones in line with international standards, further strengthening its position as a global center for industry, trade, and logistics.

Suez Canal Container Terminal is operated by APM Terminals, part of the global A.P. Moller–Maersk Group, and manages the main container terminal at East Port Said Port within the SCZone. Following the completion of a major expansion project in 2025, East Port Said was ranked the top-performing port in the region and the third most efficient globally. The renewable energy initiative aligns with Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy 2050 and supports Maersk’s ambition to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
