ISMAILIA, Egypt- Head of the Suez Canal Authority Usama Rabei said on Wednesday that rescue units of the canal are working to rescue a container ship that ran aground while passing through the waterway.
The Ever Given, the gigantic Panamanian ship that was transiting the canal, ran aground at km 151 on Tuesday. It was coming from China and heading to Rotterdam.
The accident happened after the ship, at the canal’s southern end, was met with a sudden gust of strong wind at 40 knots and a dust storm, which caused it to veer from its course and run aground.
Rabei said that navigation is now regular after the authority diverted the movement through the course of the original Suez Canal.
He added the canal authority is making much efforts for serving the international trade movement, he added.
