Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Ambassador Nabil Habashy Monday affirmed the great importance attached by Egypt to reinforce efforts of “Program Migration for Development” project, achieve sustainable development goals and invest in the human capital till the year 2030.

The ambassador was addressing the signing ceremony to put into effect the second phase of Program Migration for Development by the Egyptian-German Center for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration (EGC).

The deal was signed by the ministries of foreign affairs and planning as well as the German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Planning and Economic Development Rania al Mashat, Representative of the EU Delegation to Egypt Anne Kofoed, German Ambassador to Egypt Jürgen Schulz and the head of the GIZ in Egypt.

During his speech, Habashy said: “We are witnessing the fruits of the joint successful efforts by the Egyptian and German governments, spanning four years since the signing of the first agreement to launch the Egyptian-German Center for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration (EGC).”

The EGC crowns efforts of the Egyptian government, represented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, in negotiating with the German side since 2017, Habashy added.

The establishment of the center comes in implementation of an economic cooperation protocol signed by the the Egyptian-German joint committee during President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s visit to Germany in 2019, the ambassador said.

He added that the emigration for development project comes in line with Egypt’s political vision to open labor markets for Egyptian youth abroad.

The project represents the first existing model in Egypt for the transfer of skilled and trained labor formally and investing in human capital to create a trained workforce, in accordance with to the latest international standards, Habashy added.

The first phase of “Program Migration for Development” was launched in 2020 and ran till 2023.

The program is part of the “Returning to New Opportunities” program commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
