Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority has completed the concrete pour for the fourth level of the inner containment vessel at the reactor building of Unit 1 at the Dabaa nuclear power plant, it said in a statement.

The operation lasted 30 consecutive hours and involved five boom pumps, the authority said.

Around 80 specialists worked the day shift and another 80 the night shift, while approximately 20 workers remained on duty around the clock to ensure the uninterrupted operation of construction equipment and machinery.

A total of 1,806 cubic metres of concrete was poured, raising the reactor building from an elevation of 24.4 metres to 34 metres. The completed section is 9.6 metres high.

Chairman of the authority, Sherif Helmy, described the work as a “strategic new step” reflecting continued progress on the project.

He said the achievement resulted from close coordination among all parties involved and the authority’s monitoring of construction to ensure compliance with the highest standards of quality and nuclear safety.

Alexei Kononenko, deputy head of Russia’s Atomstroyexport and director of the Dabaa construction project, said completion of the fourth-level concrete pour marked another major milestone.

Installation of the polar crane is expected to begin by mid-August, he added.

The Dabaa plant, located on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, is being built with Russian co-operation and will comprise four nuclear power units. Construction and installation work is being carried out in line with international quality and nuclear safety standards, the authority said.
