Civil Aviation Minister Sameh Hafny is leading a high-level Egyptian delegation to the 42nd session of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) General Assembly, which opened Monday in Montreal, Canada.

The delegation includes Amr El-Sharqawy, head of the Civil Aviation Authority, Reem El-Arabi, Egypt’s alternate representative to the ICAO Council, and several senior officials.

The assembly, attended by representatives of 193 states and over 50 international organizations, is discussing the future of global air transport and setting international aviation policies for the years ahead.

In a statement, Hafny said Egypt, with its strategic vision, unique geographic position, and longstanding expertise, is working to consolidate its role as a regional hub for civil aviation.

He underlined Egypt’s commitment to supporting global efforts to enhance aviation safety, promote sustainability, and develop a safer and more efficient industry.

On the sidelines, Hafny attended a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the European Commission’s representation at ICAO, in the presence of senior EU officials and international aviation leaders.

He said the occasion was an opportunity to renew joint commitments to the regulatory principles underpinning ICAO, praising the EU as a strategic partner in advancing global civil aviation.

The ICAO General Assembly, held every three years, is the organization’s highest decision-making body. It sets civil aviation policies, adopts safety and security standards, elects ICAO Council members, and approves budgets and work programs.

It also provides a platform for member states to coordinate positions, defend national interests, and advance sustainability and environmental protection in the aviation sector.
