The Egyptian Ministry of the Environment started on Sunday removing encroachments on Qaroun Nature Reserve in the central Governorate of Fayoum. It said the campaign was ordered by Minister of the Environment, Yasmine Fouad.
The encroachments removed within the campaign violate Environmental Law no. 4/1994 which criminalizes violations against the nation’s nature reserves.
The nature reserves have to be protected for future generations, the ministry said in a statement.
Sunday’s campaign resulted in the removal of buildings constructed illegally over 161 acres of land in the reserve.
The campaign, the ministry said, also comes to put into action directives by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to remove violations against farmland, rivers and lakes in Egypt’s bid to protect the farmland and water resources.
Most of the violating buildings removed within yesterday’s campaign were located in the northern part of the reserve, the ministry said.
