Cairo’s air quality has improved thanks to the government’s continued efforts to curb pollution, with data from IQAir showing a 57 per cent decline in PM2.5 fine particulate concentrations between January and June 2026, a report issued by the Cabinet Information and Decision Support Centre, said on Saturday.
The step comes as the government presses ahead with a range of measures aimed at reducing emissions and improving air quality. These include expanding the national air quality monitoring network to 123 stations nationwide, intensifying efforts to combat the seasonal “black cloud” phenomenon, and tackling emissions from key pollution sources, the report added.
The government has also contracted 100 electric buses for Cairo’s Public Transport Authority and 20 electric buses for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. In addition, advanced equipment to monitor air pollutants and greenhouse gases has been introduced at 12 monitoring stations across Greater Cairo for the first time.
