Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aati met Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani on the sidelines of the resumed 165th session of the Arab League Council in Amman on Monday.
The two ministers underscored the deep historical and people-to-people ties between Egypt and Syria and stressed the importance of building on Al-Shaibani’s visit to Cairo early in May May.
They also welcomed the convening of the second Egyptian-Syrian governmental meeting at senior officials’ level, with the participation of trade and investment authorities from both countries, to advance economic cooperation, according to a statement by the Foreign Ministry in Cairo on Tuesday.
Abdel-Aati condemned what he described as “Israel’s blatant violations of Syria’s sovereignty and stressing the need for “Israel to withdraw from Syrian territories and comply with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement”.
He also reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, while highlighting the importance of empowering Syrian state institutions and rejecting foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs.
The Egyptian top diplomat also called for concerted efforts to combat terrorism and extremism in all their forms.
