Cairo has been ranked fourth globally on a list of the world’s 12 most beautiful cities for 2026, according to an international ranking released by Civitatis, a global platform specializing in tourism, bookings, and field experiences, placing the Egyptian capital directly behind Venice (Italy), Kyoto (Japan), and Cape Town (South Africa), and ahead of Hoi An (Vietnam) in the top five list.

The platform attributed its choice to Cairo’s ancient heritage and deep-rooted history spanning thousands of years, noting that the view of the Great Pyramid of Giza one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World alone is enough to demonstrate the city’s status and exceptional beauty.

The platform also highlighted the rich variety of Cairo’s cultural offerings, ranging from the Egyptian Museum and the Grand Egyptian Museum, which house some of the world’s rarest archaeological treasures, to its historic Islamic and Coptic landmarks, alongside vibrant traditional heritage markets like Khan el-Khalili that give visitors an authentic experience reflecting the city’s unique cultural and social spirit, as well as Nile river cruises particularly dinner cruises featuring folklore performances as one of the most popular and preferred tourism experiences globally.

This selection represents an exceptional opportunity to boost Cairo’s standing on the international tourism map and raise the profitability of the tourism and service sectors. To translate this global ranking into tangible economic and developmental gains, integrated strategic pillars can be expanded, starting with launching international marketing campaigns to invest in this assessment through global media and social media platforms under a slogan highlighting how Cairo blends historic heritage with modern development, while inviting senior international travel content creators to experience comprehensive tours reflecting the city’s architectural and cultural diversity.

Efforts also include reviving historic and Khedivial neighbourhood tourism through dedicated pedestrian routes in districts such as Downtown, Zamalek, and Garden City equipped with informational panels and smart apps explaining architectural history, alongside establishing direct express transport routes connecting the Grand Egyptian Museum and Pyramids area with the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) and Historic Cairo (Al-Gamaleya, Al-Mu’izz Street, and Khan el-Khalili).

Additionally, strategies involve promoting festival and event tourism through joint art, food, and folk music events in heritage squares and innovatively utilized buildings to encourage nighttime tourism, incentivising investment to convert distinctive architectural heritage buildings into boutique hotels offering stays with a historic character, upgrading the skills of field staff including taxi drivers, craftspeople, security personnel, and tour guides to ensure professional service, and providing easy payment methods via unified digital platforms offering consolidated tickets for museums, public transport, and attractions to streamline movement and guarantee transparent pricing.

The practical local opportunity of Cairo securing fourth place globally carries a direct responsibility that falls on the Cairo Governorate, where daily executive and administrative decisions are crucial to sustaining this ranking and converting it into long-term tourism gains.

Local government action focuses on key pillars, led by completing the restoration of Khedivial and Historic Cairo through expanding restoration work on distinctive architectural facades in Downtown, Garden City, and Zamalek with unified colors to ensure visual harmony, while tackling illegal street occupancy and informal vendor setups around major tourist destinations such as Khan el-Khalili, Ataba, and Sayyida Zeinab by reorganizing vendors into civilized alternative markets.

Plans further include enforcing strict regulations on commercial signage and visual coverage to prevent disfiguring heritage buildings or obstructing architectural landmarks, providing dedicated upkeep for tourist routes and major squares by tightening oversight on cleaning companies and developing public parks such as Azbakeya and Al-Andalus, continuously upgrading road paving quality, pedestrian sidewalks, and safe walkways for people with disabilities and tourists around key attractions, and coordinating electric bus routes and river transport to ease connections across districts like Maadi, Downtown, and Old Cairo.

Furthermore, the governorate will establish an executive tourism committee comprising relevant districts (West Cairo, Downtown, Abdeen, and Old Cairo) in coordination with the Ministries of Tourism and Antiquities and Local Development to monitor field readiness regularly, simplify procedures for holding cultural events in heritage squares, encourage converting closed heritage buildings into boutique hotels or cultural centers under legal frameworks, enforce strict operating rules and published tariffs for horse-drawn carriages (Hantour) and horse rentals with clean assembly areas to eliminate unpolished street practices, and conduct awareness programs in partnership with districts and youth organizations to foster a welcoming culture toward tourists and preserve the capital’s overall appearance.
