Cairo International Airport has successfully renewed its Public Health and Safety Readiness Accreditation (PHSRA) from Airports Council International (ACI) World, extending the certification’s validity through June 2029 and reaffirming its preparedness to respond to future public health emergencies.
The renewed accreditation cements Cairo International Airport’s position as the first—and still the only—airport in Africa to receive the internationally recognised certification under the updated global standards.
It also reflects the airport’s continued commitment to implementing the highest public health and safety standards and strengthening the resilience of its infrastructure and operational systems to address health-related risks, while ensuring a safe and healthy travel experience for both passengers and staff.
Ayman Fawzy Arab, Chairman of the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation (EHCAAN), said the renewed accreditation forms part of a comprehensive programme aimed at enhancing Cairo International Airport’s technical and operational performance and elevating its international standing.
He noted that the airport had successfully met all accreditation requirements, demonstrating its commitment to adopting management and operational practices that comply with the highest international standards in public health and safety.
Arab added that the Public Health and Safety Readiness Accreditation (PHSRA) is the world’s only airport-specific public health and safety certification programme. Developed by airport safety experts, it is aligned with the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
In its accreditation letter, ACI World commended Cairo International Airport for implementing the health measures recommended in ACI and ICAO guidelines, affirming that the airport’s operational framework is fully aligned with international best practices.
For his part, Magdy Ishak, Chairman of Cairo Airport Company, described the renewed accreditation as recognition of the dedication and professionalism of the airport’s workforce. He said it reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to the highest standards of quality, health and safety as part of its ongoing modernisation and development strategy.
The PHSRA programme provides airports with an independent assessment of their public health preparedness and offers practical recommendations to enhance operational resilience, mitigate the impact of future public health emergencies, and ensure a safer, more secure travel environment for passengers, employees and surrounding communities.
