The government is keen to develop pottery village to attract more tourists to Old Cairo. Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal yesterday visited the 2nd Pottery Festival. The theme of the event in Old Cairo on 3-5 July is ‘The Clay Jewellers’.

The festival was held in response to directive from the political leadership to develop the pottery village in Fustat and revive one of Egypt’s oldest traditional crafts, the governor said, adding that the exhibition is an excellent opportunity for potters to market their products.

Abdel Aal also reviewed progress so far in supplying kilns to the pottery village.

The government has developed the pottery village to improve Egyptian products, Abdel Aal said, pointing out that the event is ideal for obtaining the finest cooking utensils and decorative pieces at  competitive prices.

Located in Old Cairo district, Fustat Pottery Village comprises 152 workshops and has undergone thorough development in recent years as part of government encouragement of handicrafts.

The government wants to put the pottery village on the map of tourist attractions and boost sales at local and international level, he said.

“The village will play a significant role in revitalising the whole area that embraces the Religious Complex, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation and the Al-Fustat Hills Garden,” he said.

“Development work included connecting water, natural gas, electricity and sewerage utilities,” the governor added.
