Egypt’s Cabinet announced on Thursday that initial investigations conducted by the relevant authorities into the fire that broke out aboard two ships at Damietta Port on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 indicate that the incident was caused by a drone attack.
The statement confirmed that the fire had been fully contained and noted that no party has claimed responsibility for the incident.
The relevant authorities are continuing investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible, while taking all necessary measures to safeguard Egypt’s interests and protect national security, the Cabinet noted.
A fire broke out aboard two vessels while they were berthed at the port on Wednesday July 29.
Emergency response teams, supported by the Armed Forces and Civil Defence units, succeeded in containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to neighbouring facilities or disrupting port operations.
The government has then reiterated that the safety and security of Egypt’s ports and strategic infrastructure remain a top priority.
It also stressed that all competent authorities are working in close coordination to complete the investigation, enhance preventive measures where necessary, and ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the country’s maritime facilities.
