Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar met  on Thursday with Managing Director of GE Healthcare Africa Mohamed Haroun and his accompanying delegation to discuss progress on the national localisation project for ultrasound devices.

The meeting reviewed key achievements on the ground, including the completion of a new factory in 6th of October City to manufacture ultrasound machines, marking a milestone in localising their production.

The meeting also addressed the ongoing training of the workforce through specialised programmes aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.

The discussions also touched on the healthcare sector’s needs for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems.

According to Abdel Ghaffar, production and assembly of the first MRI scanner in the country is set to begin in the near future – part of broader governmental efforts to localise medical device manufacturing, meet domestic demand, and eventually export to African markets.

The Minister emphasised that the country is currently undertaking major projects in the healthcare sector, with ongoing modernisation initiatives that align with national goals to enhance healthcare services.

Additionally, the meeting explored ways to expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance medical performance and improve overall health outcomes.

Discussions also included building human capacity and training medical personnel to international standards, while leveraging existing expertise in the field.
