CAIRO– Egypt’s Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa has deemed terrorism and extremism as two of the most dangerous threats to societies.
No country is safe against repercussions of terrorism and extremism for peace and security, Gomaa said in a speech that was delivered by head of the foreign affairs center of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs Noureddin Qenawi during the second thematic meeting of the “Call of the Sahel”, which opened in Algeria on February 26.
Speaking on behalf of the minister, during the session entitled “engaging communities in the prevention of violent extremism and addressing the conditions conducive to terrorism”, Qenawi blamed what he called “perverted religious thought” – which adopts wrong explanation of texts and distorts the correct concepts – for the development of such phenomena.
Such thoughts are used “ideologically” by some deviant and extremist parties to serve their agendas to destroy countries, Qenawi charged.
He called for outlining a clear intellectual theory to create awareness in the face of extremism, noting that this could only be done through correcting the misconceptions and promoting the right moderate teachings of religions.
