Assistant FM tells MENA: Political leadership directs Cabinet to pay attention to expats

The political leadership in Egypt is keen on integrating expats in huge national projects at home, a senior official at the Foreign Ministry said.

Ismail Khairat, assistant foreign minister for consular affairs, said President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is personally following up the file of Egyptians abroad.

Khairat was speaking to MENA on Monday on the sidelines of the fourth “Egyptians Abroad” conference that is held under the auspices of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli.

The Cabinet and Foreign Ministry have been directed to give big attention to conditions of Egyptian communities in foreign countries and listen to problems, if any, they are facing abroad, Khairat said.

The government has successfully acted to involve many of the youth abroad in development plans, and to benefit from their ideas in a number of files, atop of which those of energy and climate, the diplomat said.

Some Egyptian businessmen abroad have contributed to investment projects in Egypt with the aim to improve the infrastructure and achieve sustainable development, he added.

An “Egyptians Abroad for Investment and Development Co.” has been established, grouping Egyptian investors from some world countries, Khairat noted.

According to Khairat, Moday’s conference is a good chance to explore the outcome of the national dialogue and convince expats to take part in it.

Egyptians abroad should also be encouraged to take part in all political and electoral events, he stressed.

The Foreign Ministry is currently working to automate all consular activities and services in line with the most advanced world systems, the diplomat made it clear.

He proudly spoke of a base of expats in parliament, believing this is an unprecedented step that reflects attention paid by the Egyptian state to its nationals abroad.

The Foreign Ministry will spare no effort to help Egyptians abroad through its embassies and consulates, Khairat stressed.
