Minister of Higher Education Khaled Abdul-Ghaffar Thursday announced the opening for applications for the 2021 UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
The prize, which has been awarded since 2015, is in recognition of distinguished efforts by individuals and institutions in sustainable development, Abdul-Ghaffar said.
Commission Secretary General Ghada Abdul-Bari said the award is financed by the Japanese government in support of the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD.
The award comprises of three annual prizes of $50,000.
The prizewinners recognise the role of education in connecting the social, economic, cultural and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
The GAP calls for scaling up of ESD action at all levels as a means of implementing all the Sustainable Development Goals.
