An Egyptian archaeological mission affiliated with the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) has uncovered a remarkable collection of artefacts at one of the country’s most historic ancient sites, shedding new light on a city once at the centre of pharaonic power.

The discoveries were made at Ihnasya El-Medina in Beni Suef Governorate – known in antiquity as Heracleopolis Magna. The finds span thousands of years of history, from the pharaonic times through the Greek and Roman eras.

Among the most notable discoveries was a carved stone block bearing the royal cartouche of King Senusret III, one of ancient Egypt’s most prominent Middle Kingdom rulers, inscribed alongside the name of Osiris-Naref, a deity revered in the region. Archaeologists believe the block was reused in later construction, a common ancient practice that often helped preserve earlier artefacts.

The mission also uncovered extensions of a Roman-era basilica, the remains of a Doric temple, and a finely crafted marble head of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love — a rare discovery highlighting the city’s cosmopolitan character during later periods. Fragments of wall statues and terracotta moulds used for minting coins were also found among the artefacts.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy described the discoveries as a significant addition to Egypt’s archaeological record, saying they reflect the layers of culture and civilisation that shaped the country over successive eras. He added that opening archaeological sites to visitors remains a national priority.

SCA Secretary-General Hisham El-Leithy described the cartouche of Senusret III as particularly important, noting the king’s close association with Ihnasya and what the discovery reveals about the city’s sacred status in ancient Egypt.

Ihnasya El-Medina served as Egypt’s capital during the Ninth and Tenth Dynasties and was the seat of the 20th nome of Upper Egypt, making each new discovery there an important insight into a pivotal chapter of human history.
