Egypt’s Alexandria Port Authority has recorded the highest cargo throughput in its history during fiscal year (FY) 2025/26, Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir said on Sunday.

The port handled more than 82 million tonnes of cargo, up from 74.8 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year. The increase represents 10 per cent year on year.

El-Wazir said the record performance reflects the continuous development of the port’s infrastructure and ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency and logistics services.

Dry bulk cargo registered the strongest growth among all cargo categories, with volumes rising 19.3 per cent to 36.5 million tonnes, compared with 30.6 million tonnes in the previous fiscal year.

Containerised cargo also posted solid growth, increasing 11 per cent to 28.3 million tonnes, while liquid bulk cargo reached 10.3 million tonnes, up 1 per cent year on year.

Container handling also achieved a record performance, with the port processing 2.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during FY2025/26, representing a 13 per cent increase compared with the previous fiscal year.

The minister added that the Alexandria Port Authority also recorded unprecedented levels of vessel traffic, receiving 7,026 ships during the fiscal year.

Cruise ships recorded the fastest growth, with arrivals increasing by nearly 54 per cent year on year. Ferry traffic rose 25.7 per cent, while dry bulk vessels increased 21.5 per cent to 1,605 ships, up by 284 vessels from the previous year.

Liquid bulk vessel traffic grew 11.8 per cent, while container ship calls reached 2,418, marking a 6.5 per cent increase.

Maritime tourism also recorded strong growth, with passenger numbers rising by more than 70 per cent to exceed 82,000 passengers during the fiscal year.
