CAIRO – Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit asserted that the Arab region can not get back on its feet until the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is resolved, based on the two-state solution.

Abul Gheit’s comments came during a lecture that he delivered at the Italian Academy of Linci (Accademia dei Lincei) about the world changes and their fallout on the Arab world, in the presence of a galaxy of the academy’s professors and a host of Arab and foreign diplomats, as well as Italian diplomats, according to a statement released by the pan-Arab body on Thursday.

In his lecture, the AL chief gave an overview of the global changes since the end of the Second World War, noting that there is a clear indication of fundamental changes in the international order, especially with shaking the balance of power between its two main actors, the statement added.

He underlined that rivalry and conflict between the major powers was a negative development in international relations and reflects the failure of diplomatic methods to stop the war, the statement noted.

Abul Gheit asserted the necessity of showing the highest degree of responsibility and self-restraint by world leaders, while finding a way to address their concerns via diplomacy, the statement read.

In this context, the AL secretary general shed light on the repercussions of competition between the world powers on the Arab region, citing the crises in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen that were caused by foreign interference among other reasons.

He also pointed to the negative role played by neighboring regional powers in deepening the problems of Arab states in an attempt to increase their influence and restore former glory at the expense of the sovereign rights of Arab states.
