Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit said he hopes that the 44th of the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils (FASRC), launched at the AL’s premises Monday, will usher in a new era toward paying a greater attention to scientific research and creativity, along with maintaining achievement of human development in the Arab region.
In an address, delivered on his behalf by Assistant Secretary General and Head of Media and Communication Sector Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Abul Gheit urged countries, organizations, civil society, intellectuals and research institutes to search for the most successful approaches, based on facts of today’s world in accordance with the spirit of the age.
The move is meant to develop production and achieve economic and social development, he added.
Abul Gheit said government allocations do not exceed 1% of Gross Domestic Product in the Arab world and the private sector is contributing by 3%, which, he added, shows a flagrant difference, compared to developed countries.
He underscored the importance of promoting scientific research by upping government spending and encouraging the private sector to participate in promotion efforts and capitalize on vistas of international cooperation and partnerships.
Abul Gheit said the General Secretariat, in cooperation with the Federation and different partners representing special Arab organizations, laid down the framework of the Arab Strategy for Scientific Research in the social, cultural and economic domains, that was approved by the ministers in charge of higher education and scientific research during the 17th round of the Federation in Cairo in 2019.
