CAIRO – Egypt’s Minister of Local Development Hisham Amna has announced that 7.650 million trees in several governorates during the first phase of the 100 Million Trees initiative launched by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, noting that 99 percent of the first phase plan has been implemented with a total cost of EGP 200 million over FY 2022/2023.

This came in a report submitted to the minister. The report also outlined preparations for planting 15 million trees in the second phase of the initiative through cooperation between the ministries of agriculture, environment and housing in the various governorates.

The minister underlined the importance of the initiative and ordered the governors to prepare detailed report on the needs of each governorate so as the ministry can work on providing the necessary funding.

He added that the initiative of the President receives great attention from the Egyptian state, through the expansion of afforestation, due to its many environmental, aesthetic and economic benefits, taking into account planting trees in appropriate places and in appropriate numbers that will play their aesthetic and environmental role and reduce the negative effects of climate change.

The minister stated that the initiative also aims to double the per capita share of green areas nationwide, improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gases, achieve the maximum economic benefit from trees, improve the public health of citizens, and achieve sustainable agricultural development.
