The number of Egyptian universities featured in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings increased to 47, up from 38 in 2025, with nine universities joining the global sustainability ranking for the first time.
The ranking assesses universities based on their sustainability initiatives and environmental performance across campus operations. The 2026 edition included 2,016 universities from 110 countries.
Alexandria University retained its position as Egypt’s highest-ranked university for sustainability, placing 107th globally. October 6 University ranked second nationally and 220th worldwide, while Sohag University came third in Egypt and 245th globally.
The results featured public, private, national and technological universities, with several Egyptian institutions improving their standings compared with the previous year.
A number of newly established universities also made their first appearance in the global sustainability ranking.
Egyptian universities recorded strong performances across individual sustainability indicators.
Minya University ranked first among Egyptian universities in the Environment and Infrastructure indicator, while Benha University led the Energy and Climate Change category. Sohag University topped Egyptian universities in Water Management and also ranked first in the Education and Research indicator. Meanwhile, October 6 University led the Sustainable Transportation category.
Higher Education Minister Abdelaziz Konsowa praised the results, saying that the addition of nine universities to the ranking in a single year reflects growing attention to measuring, monitoring and documenting sustainability practices across Egyptian campuses.
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings evaluate universities across seven key areas: infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water management, transportation, education and research, and governance and digitalisation. The governance and digitalisation indicator was introduced for the first time this year.
The ranking aims to encourage universities to address climate change, improve resource efficiency, promote sustainable transportation and develop environmentally friendly campuses.
