Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad chaired a meeting on Thursday to follow up on the ministry’s and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) investment plan for the 2026/2027 fiscal year.
The session assessed progress on projects aimed at reducing pollution, addressing climate change impacts, conserving biodiversity, and strengthening environmental governance.
The plan must reflect national priorities and citizens’ needs, focusing on projects with direct environmental benefits and safeguarding natural resources, the minister stressed.
She directed continuous monitoring of implementation rates, immediate intervention to overcome challenges, and strict adherence to timelines to ensure targets are met.
The minister also highlighted integrated projects such as the climate adaptation programme, including the interactive risk map, the establishment of a climate resilience centre, and the development of local climate governance systems.
She also pointed to ongoing work to improve air quality monitoring networks, industrial emissions tracking, and vehicle exhaust testing.
The plan further covers water quality monitoring, coastal and lake assessments, and the protection of nature reserves, including upgrades to facilities in the Red Sea and Wadi El-Hitan.
Industrial environment programmes will advance decarbonisation in chemical, fertiliser and food sectors.
Awad instructed the upgrade of the Cairo Environmental Cultural Centre and the Ma’asara Awareness Centre, alongside digital transformation in the ministry’s crisis room.
