Head of the Leather Export Council and a member of the Board of Directors of the Leather Tanning Chamber at the Federation of Egyptian Industries Mahmoud Sarg affirmed that the leather tanning industry is one of the sectors in which Egypt has a clear competitive advantage.

It represents the backbone of leather industry value chains and is also an important contributor to national income.

This came on the sidelines of the visit of Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, to Robbiki Leather City, where he inspected the workflow in factories and the technological center for leather tanning.

He also reviewed current production rates and discussed mechanisms to support exports and the challenges facing investors in the sector.

Sarg said that intensive efforts are currently being made to support veterinary care programs and develop livestock resources in order to improve the quality of rawhides.

These efforts are accompanied by the development of technical and logistical services in Robbiki Leather City and the encouragement of new investments in the tanning sector and its supplies, which contributes to enhancing the sustainability of the industry and maximizing the added value of local livestock resources.

He pointed out that Robbiki Leather City, which is built on an area of about 500 feddans, represents a major turning point in the development of Egypt’s leather industry.

It is considered one of the largest specialized projects in this field in the Middle East and aims to organize the tanning sector and improve production quality, thereby supporting the competitiveness of Egyptian products in both local and global markets and helping restore export growth after its decline in recent years.

Sarg added that Robbiki City has significant capabilities that qualify it to become a regional hub for leather industry and trade, given its advanced infrastructure and specialized technological center.

He stressed that continuing to develop logistical services and enhancing the city’s international promotion are two decisive factors in attracting foreign investments and opening new export markets.

The head of the Leather Export Council explained that the government is currently working to remove challenges that have faced the sector for years, similar to what has been done in other specialized industrial zones such as Damietta Furniture City, where technical and technological support centers have been provided to develop the industry.

The same approach is being implemented in Robbiki City to help increase Egyptian exports of leather industries, including leather tanning as well as the manufacture of shoes and bags—industries that rely heavily on global developments in designs and fashion.
