AS technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly becoming an indispensable part of everyday life, cybersecurity has become increasingly critical for protecting digital infrastructure and data.

Nowadays, AI and cloud computing are at the core of business and government operations, making data infrastructure increasingly necessary to modern economies.

However, the issue is not only where data is stored, but also where it is processed, who has access to it, and how securely it is managed.

Therefore, Egypt has launched a new data centre and sovereign AI project to extend local computing capacity and tighten its grip on sensitive data.

The project is carried out through a partnership between Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric, and Cassava Technologies under the umbrella of Africa Data Centres Egypt.

The new sovereign AI project is considered a key step towards strengthening the national digital infrastructure and reducing reliance on foreign computing capacity.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hendy has stated that the project is aimed at boosting Egypt’s digital infrastructure, promoting cloud and AI services, and enhancing data sovereignty by enabling secure local data hosting and processing.

The minister also noted that the project could reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional hub for data, cloud services and artificial intelligence.

During the first three years, the project is expected to reach a 20-megawatt capacity while planning to expand up to 200 megawatts.

The new centre is anticipating initial investments of around $200 million, rising to up to $1 billion through the whole phases of the project.

Sovereign AI refers to the nation’s capability to manage, host, and operate artificial intelligence systems through national and local infrastructure.

This means that sensitive data would be processed under local regulations. The sovereign AI component provides advanced computing capabilities, including GPU-based services.

Moreover, data is hosted and processed locally, which is crucial from a cybersecurity perspective for government agencies, banks and companies handling sensitive information.

Therefore, the project goes beyond establishing a data centre; it targets building local computing capacity which could support AI applications, cloud services and other data-intensive operations.

Yet, digital sovereignty is not only about establishing local data centers, but also building strong cybersecurity, explicit legislation, professional personnel, and digital infrastructure capable of operating efficiently and reliably.

Government organisations would use the local computing capabilities to operate digital services while keeping sensitive data within the country.

Banks and financial institutions would likely have greater control over customer data and faster access to AI tools for fraud detection, risk management, and customer service.

The new centre will also support other sectors, such as telecommunications, startups and technology agencies, and healthcare providers, to make the best use of local cloud computing and AI infrastructure to process data more efficiently, without relying entirely on data centres located outside Egypt.
