In a recently published video shared by the Cabinet on social media, the government highlighted significant advancements in the ongoing development of Sokhna Port – a strategic national project aimed at transforming Egypt into a regional hub for transportation, logistics, and transit trade. The video showcased the scale of infrastructure works currently underway, aligned with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to upgrade all Egyptian ports and strengthen their integration into global trade networks.

Sokhna Port, located on the Red Sea, is emerging as one of the most crucial components of Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable economic growth and infrastructure modernisation. The port, which spans over a total area of 29 square kilometres, is a central node in the logistic corridor extending from Sokhna to El-Dekheila, part of the broader “Sokhna–Alexandria” integrated container axis linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

The government has announced the completion of the first phase of the project, with the Hutchison container terminal’s infrastructure is now 100 per cent complete. Work is progressing steadily on the superstructure, including administrative buildings, station yards, and security installations.

Current development efforts include the construction of five new basins and 18 kilometers of deep-water berths reaching depths of 18 meters, enabling the port to accommodate the world’s largest container ships. In addition, 9.2 million square meters of container yards are being developed to support the expansion trade activities.

To enhance logistical efficiency, the plan includes 5.2 square kilometers of dedicated logistics zones, 17 kilometers of internal roads, and a 30-kilometer railway line directly connected to Egypt’s high-speed electric rail network. These integrated transport solutions are designed to streamline cargo movement, reduce turnaround time, and elevate the port’s operational capacity to global standards.

Sokhna Port is a flagship in a broader national strategy to overhaul Egypt’s maritime infrastructure. The Ministry of Transport is simultaneously implementing a nationwide plan to develop both Red Sea and Mediterranean ports, including the construction of three new ports, raising to 18 the total number of Egyptian seaports.

In light of its state-of-the-art facilities and strategic location, Sokhna Port is poised to become the largest on the Red Sea. Its development will significantly boost Egypt’s share in global transit trade, enhance regional connectivity, and support national economic competitiveness. As the project continues to unfold, it underscores Egypt’s ambition to position itself as a leading logistics and maritime hub in the region.
