EGYPT’S Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel el-Wazir, witnessed the signing of a $4.2 billion agreement between the Egyptian government, represented by Giza Governorate, and UK-based Polar Hydro.

The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan el-Khatib, Giza Governor Adel el-Naggar, and a number of senior officials.

The agreement aims to implement a solid waste management and treatment project in Shabramant, Giza.

Minister of Local Development Manal Awad said the agreement will support a project to treat waste generated by Giza’s districts and centres, with a capacity of no less than 5,000 tonnes per day.

She explained that Polar Hydro will also be responsible for rehabilitating the waste disposal sites and landfill in Shabramant, operating it as a special economic zone, and developing an operational plan for the Kerdasa and Mariouteya intermediate waste transfer stations.

Awad added that the project forms part of the government’s efforts to establish an effective waste management system through recycling, treatment, and safe disposal, within the framework of the integrated solid waste management system.

She stressed the importance of completing waste management projects nationwide to achieve tangible improvements in cleanliness services and maximise waste utilisation under the circular economy model.

Giza Governor Adel el-Naggar said the agreement reflects the state’s orientation towards green economy projects and stronger public-private partnerships. He noted that the project will upgrade solid waste management through the use of advanced technologies and expanded recycling.

The British-funded agreement will transform the 714-feddan Shabramant landfill into an advanced bio-factory and a sustainable public park. The project aims to process 30 million tonnes of accumulated waste into high-value export products, including biofuels, fertilisers, and synthetic graphite.
