CAIRO – Egypt’s Trade and Industry Minister Nivine Gamea stressed the government’s deep interest in expanding the use of clean energy in production and service sectors.

She added that clear strategies were laid down to use modern technology in the industrial and trade sectors.

Gamea made the remarks during the inauguration of a conference marking the launch of a solar photovoltaic unit at a wholesale vegetables market organized by the Chamber of Commerce in Alexandria.

Gamea said this market will be the first to operate by clean energy in line with the government policy aiming at adopting clean and renewable energy resources to protect the environment.

Gamea said Egypt seeks that clean and renewable energy will represent 42 percent of total energy by 2035 against 20 percent nowadays.

She referred to the government’s efforts to turn to cleaner energy resources, such as replacing old cars with natural gas powered vehicles.

For his part, European Ambassador in Cairo Christian Berger said the EU is a key contributor to cutting almost one ton o greenhouse gas emissions annually through the establishment of Alexandria’s solar-powered wholesale vegetables market.

The EU seeks to cut emissions by 55% by 2030 in Europe, he said.
