CAIRO- Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides agreed Wednesday to pursue strategic partnership between the two countries and promote ties in the various spheres, especially in trade, clean and renewable energy.
The two leaders also agreed on enhancing economic and military ties along with pursuing coordination at the political level toward various issues of mutual interest.
During a joint press conference held with his Cypriot counterpart following their talks at Al Ittihadiya Presidential Palace on Wednesday, President Sisi expressed his aspiration that the next period will witness more cooperation and coordination between Egypt and Cyprus, in order to achieve prosperity for the two brotherly peoples.
During the press conference, President Sisi welcomed the visit of the Cypriot president to Egypt, the first of its kind, since his election as the Cypriot president.
President Sisi, meanwhile, said that choosing Egypt as the first regional destination, since the election of Christodoulides reflects the keenness of the two countries on promoting bilateral ties between the two countries.
President Sisi further hailed the contributions of the former Cypriot president in promoting ties between Cyprus and Egypt.
President Sisi, meanwhile, said that he discussed with the Cypriot president ways of boosting bilateral ties.
Talks also underlined the need of preparing for the second round of the joint higher committee, with the aim of further promoting ties in the various domains, said President Sisi.
President Sisi further said that talks also drew attention to cooperation in the energy sphere, topped by the project to connect the Cyprus gas field to two liquefaction plants in Egypt.
President Sisi affirmed on the constants of Egypt’s principled vision regarding the importance of achieving security and stability in the eastern Mediterranean region, through all the countries’ commitment to respect international law and the Charter of the United Nations, especially the principles of non-interference in internal affairs and respect for the sovereign rights and territorial waters of all countries of region.
He also underlined Egypt’s firm position on Cyprus issue and its support for efforts to settle it, in accordance with the decisions of international legitimacy and relevant United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions.
President Sisi further rejected taking unilateral steps by any party with the aim of creating a new fait accompli in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Talking about the Palestinian cause, President Sisi affirmed to his Cypriot counterpart the necessity of rallying international efforts in order to put an end to violence, stop building settlements and establish an independent Palestinian State.
President Sisi also added that he briefed his Cypriot counterpart on Egypt’s unremitting efforts to find a just and lasting solution to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis.
