An agreement will soon be signed for the first waste-to-energy plant made with German technology coating $150 million, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad announced on Tuesday.

The minister said in press statements that the first plant in Egypt to convert waste into energy will be in Giza Governorate and six other sites are ready.

The minister also referred to bio-gas units in Fayyoum Governorate and a large unit at Giza Zoo, where animal waste is converted into electricity, in addition to projects in rural areas nationwide to convert manure into fertiliser and bio-gas as part of the Decent Life initiative.

Fouad said the Bio-energy Foundation for Sustainable Development, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Environment, is preparing a study on the conversion of waste from poultry farms into energy.

There is 42 million tons of agricultural waste in Egypt and the strategy to deal with it has been finalized, she said.

Fouad also reviewed ministry efforts in dealing with electronic waste as there are now nine electronic-waste recycling factories.
