Raising awareness of ‘solidarity’ programme benefits

Yasser Abdullah

Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine el-Qabbag on Thursday launched a public information campaign on the conditions and benefits Takaful (Solidarity) programme.

A twofold approach has been adopted to educate the nation on the aims and objectives of the Takaful programme and how to qualify for benefits.

Firstly, notices will be broadcast on 35 television channels to tell viewers that the Takaful programme is aimed at reducing poverty, raising living standards for families in need, and giving the children of deprived families better opportunities for education and employment.

Secondly, leaflets will be published and distributed outlining the conditions and benefits of the Takaful programme in addition to posters to be displayed in General Healthcare Authority units that dispense services within the Comprehensive Health Insurance System.

The minister said the campaign will help reduce the school drop-out rate, curb child labour and treat and prevent diseases related to malnutrition.

Beneficiaries receive income support and healthcare services, and are encouraged to keep their children in school.

Households eligible for the Takaful programme must ensure that their children between the ages of 6 to 18 have an 80 per cent school attendance record.

Families receiving benefits will be visited four times a year by staff from clinics who will monitor the growth and nutrition of children under 6.

The sessions help promote better diets, regular immunisations, and ante-natal and post-natal care. The programme covers a maximum of three children per household and beneficiaries must renew their applications for the programme every 3 years.
