Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri has reasserted that the outputs of the Sharm el-Sheikh world climate summit represent an important milestone especially regarding the worthiness of multilateral action and its ability to achieve tangible results.

The foreign minister’s remarks came in a speech he delivered to the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) Summit that opened in the United Arab Emirates capital on Monday. He gave the speech as a key speaker to an ADSW session devoted to a consideration of the outcomes of the COP27 Conference held in Sharm el-Sheikh last November. Several ministers and senior international officials concerned with climate change attended the session.

In his speech, Shoukri referred to Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week as an important platform for discussing sustainable economic and environmental interactions in the region and around the world, noting that this year’s edition of this event is of particular significance.

This year’s ADSW edition, he told the session, is being held at the beginning of the road after the COP27 conference, leading to the next session of the COP28 Climate Conference, set to convene in Dubai by the end of the year, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

Shoukri also highlighted the success of the COP27 conference in incorporating into its agenda the item pertaining to climate change losses and damages, describing this as an unprecedented accomplishment for in international climate conferences. Success in launching a fund for such losses and damages, he added, reflected the collective will of the participating countries to consolidate global aspirations regarding climate action.

Minister Shoukri then presented the other important results of the Sharm el-Sheikh conference, foremost of which is strengthening efforts to mitigate the consequences of climate change, emphasising the necessity of preserving the goals of the Paris Agreement, agreeing on a new programme to mitigate the consequences of climate change over a period of 6 years and a programme of action to achieve a just transition towards natural resources.

The foreign minister also highlighted the serious call launched by the Sharm el-Sheikh conference for multilateral development banks and international financing institutions to reconsider their policies in a manner that ensures giving due priority to enhancing efforts to mobilise climate finance and facilitate access to it, Spokesman Abu Zeid said.
