The aim of water resources and irrigation projects under the umbrella Nexus of Water, Food and Energy (NWFE) is to boost efforts towards decarbonisation and adaptation to climate change.

Also, these projects play their role in the transition to a green economy with the expansion of the use of solar energy for desalination and upgrade agricultural practices.

Thesae statements by Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Hany Sewilam during his meeting with Minister of International Co-operation Rania el-Mashaat on Thursday to look into the status of water projects in the NWFE programme.

Sewilam referred to major projects in sustainable water resource management with a view to sustainable food security.

Minister of International Co-operation Rania el-Mashaat said that the NWFE programme, which was launched in July, is aimed at accelerating the implementation of Egypt’s programme to face climate change.

The programme integrates climate action and development efforts through Confronting Climate Change (CCC) projects, el-Mashaat said.

“The platform is a unique opportunity for the international community to support CCC programs based on the Paris Agreement,” el-Mashaat said.

“Egypt seeks to strengthen partnerships with international development partners to implement water resources and irrigation projects under the NWFE umbrella,” el-Mashaat added, referring to finance agreements with various development   partners worth a total $668 million.

“Egypt intends to reduce the risks of climate change by setting up an early warning programme in co-operating with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD),” she said.

“Egypt wants at least 42 per cent renewables in its energy mix by 2030, and to promote activities related to irrigation and water desalination with the use of clean energy,” she added.
