ISMAILIA, Egypt – Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Osama Rabie said Friday that the SCA is keen on upgrading the technical level of its arsenals with the help of new expertise.

He cited a contract with China’s Guangzhou to build five new tugboats, seeing in it a chance to exchange high-tech know-how.

Rabie was inspecting major SCA facilities earlier today to get firsthand information about work progress at the Port Tawfiq Naval Arsenal.

The SCA chairman was briefed on the development of activities in the field of shipbuilding, as well as construction work of the new ferry, with a tonnage of 210 tons, at the northern dock of the Port Tawfiq Naval Arsenal.

The new ferry at the Port Tawfiq Naval Arsenal is similar to two ferries being built at the Port Said Naval Shipyard; and all three should serve the movement of vehicles and individuals in the “Shatt axis” in Suez city.

The ferry is 57 meters long and 15 meters wide. It is equipped with 2 SCANIA machines with a capacity of 400 horsepower, and 2 VOLVO generators with a capacity of 60 kilowatts each.

Rabie also followed up progress of the construction of two Watercraft boats at the fiberglass factory. The length of the boat is 13.70 meters, its width is 4.10 meters with a draft of 1.18 meters, and its speed is 20 knots.
