The head of Sudan’s original Democratic Unionist Party, Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani, has sent a letter to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, thanking him for the time he stayed in Egypt.

“We are pleased to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to you for the period of our stay in Cairo,” he said in the letter, wishing President Sisi and Egypt progress and prosperity, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

Mirghani sent the letter as he left Cairo to Khartoum on Monday to contribute to the unification of national ranks and Sudan’s exit from its crisis, the news agency said.

Upon directives from President Sisi, an Egyptian plane was made available for Mirghani to fly back to Khartoum in recognition of his national position and his political and spiritual value, MENA said.

Mirghani, who is also leader of the Sudanese Khatmia sect, has been out of the Sudan since September 2013, and he counts on his return to Khartoum yesterday in supporting political conciliation and stability at this delicate stage that the Arab African country is going through in its contemporary political history, the news agency added.

His son Jaafar who acts as deputy head of the Sudanese Democratic Unionist Party has emphasised in statements to MENA that his father’s return to the homeland is considered a lifeline to the Sudan and the Sudanese people.

Jaafar also stressed that the gathering of Sudanese people waiting for the arrival of Mirghani signals a point of hope for unifying the ranks in order to achieve conciliation and peace, calling on all political forces to join in a democratic peace agreement.
