The Egyptian ministers of petroleum, electricity and international co-operation signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Union on the strategic strategy between the two sides in the green hydrogen domain.

This came on the fringe of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).

In statements on Wednesday, Petroleum Minister Tarek Mulla said the inking of the strategic partnership with the EU in the field of green hydrogen and its derivatives falls within the framework of the developing solutions for carbon-free new energy resources.

This is part of the world’s drive to secure sustainable energy at suitable prices to confront climate change.

The inking of the memo shows that Egypt and the EU will continue to work on achieving the joint strategic vision on cooperating in the energy domain in addition to accelerating the implementation of the Paris climate agreement goals, he said, reviewing Egypt’s efforts to enhance cooperation with international partners to invest in hydrogen production.

He noted that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi announced last week at COP27 the launch of the international green hydrogen forum in partnership with Belgium and a number of international partners.

Meanwhile, Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker said green hydrogen production is expected to grow quickly in view of securing needed technology.

He noted that the political leadership has called for preparing an integrated national strategy on low-carbon hydrogen as a promising future energy source.

On the fringe of COP27, the first stage for implementing the first clean hydrogen station in Ain Sokhna was launched

For her part, International Cooperation Minister Rania Mashat said the ministry is working on the Nexus of Water, Food and Energy (NWFE) Programme which represents a model for implementing the president’s directives to develop new and renewable energy sources and green hydrogen.

Meanwhile, Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, said Egypt has great potentials in the hydrogen production domain.

She lauded the announcement of such step within the framework of such successful conference, stressing that Egypt is a key partner to the EU.

For his part, Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission, expressed appreciation to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for his aware vision to develop hydrogen industry in Egypt.
