Egypt denounces UNHCHR interference in judicial affairs

Egypt rejects the statement issued by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the situation of an Egyptian citizen tried and convicted and currently serving his sentence and the call for his release.

The content of the statement deliberately undermines the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law as an indispensable cornerstone for the protection and promotion of human rights.

The description of a judicial decision as “unfair” is an unacceptable insult.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights, by issuing this statement, violates the principles of impartiality and objectivity stated in the General Assembly resolution establishing his mandate, and is addressing an individual issue on the basis of selectivity which further puts in doubt his objectivity.

Furthermore, he seems to have relied on unsubstantiated information derived from sources propagating false allegations. The fact that the High Commissioner issues definitive statements portrayed as facts without any evidence relying on hearsay further erodes both his credibility and that of the institution that he represents on behalf of the international community.

We expect the High Commissioner as an international employee to respect his mandate and show professionalism as he starts his tenure and to rely solely on credible sources of information in the future and to refrain from commenting on cases tried before Egyptian courts, and verdicts issued in an attempt to advocate for violating national laws. We call upon the High Commissioner to focus on the promotion and protection of human rights through cooperation and dialogue.
