IWMI at Cairo Water Week 2022 to promote adaptation in the water system in Egypt and MENA

Cairo – The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), participats in several high-level events at Cairo Water Week 2022 which aims to present and discuss key issues, policies, strategies, plans, and actions related to water-climate challenges. IWMI top-level delegation to the event will lead and speak in several sessions promoting multi-stakeholders dialogues seeking to support the adaptation in the water sector. IWMI is making strenuous efforts to promote its Transformative Futures for Water Security (TFWS) initiative that aims to initiate dialogues on the interactions between Research & Development and the water stakeholders in MENA. IWMI Director General Dr Mark Smith will speak about this year-long initiative in IWMI’s first side event session due on 17th October, to be chaired by Dr Khaldon Khachman, General Secretary of Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA). Our keynote speakers in this session include prominent representatives from Egypt’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, The Mediterranean Youth for Water Network (MedYWat), The Arab Water Council (AWC), and the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC). “Food Trade, Food Safety and Water Reuse”, is IWMI’s second technical session on 18th October, which will discuss the links between water reuse, food safety and regional food trade in the MENA, as well as the challenges and opportunities to harmonize regulations and unlock food trade potential. Several inspiring speakers from IWMI and FAO will give keynote presentations in this session. The third IMWI event on 19th October, under the title “CGIAR contribution to Sustainable Agricultural Water Management in the MENA: Tapping into Research for Development Impact”, will provide an interactive platform to discuss and share learnings, evidence, best practices, and success stories about CGIAR water management-related innovations in MENA. Dr. Aly Abousabaa, CGIAR Regional Director, will chair the session, which includes presentations/panel discussions around water management, best practices and innovations under increasing uncertainties in the region. Recommendations on adaptation in the water system (for the COP27) will be presented and Dr Youssef Brouziyne will introduce the resent results about Water Accounting in Morocco. Moreover, this event will feature a brand-new paper on Climate Security in the MENA.
