Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of relations with Egypt, noting that Moscow considers Cairo as one of the most important trade and economic partners in Africa and the Arab world.

President Putin made this statement yesterday as he received the credentials of a number of new foreign ambassadors in Russia, including the new Egyptian ambassador, Nazih El Naggar, according to Russia Today.

Putin stressed that friendly relations with Egypt are gradually being developed in accordance with the comprehensive partnership and strategic co-operation agreement signed in 2018.

Putin added that Russia is working on implementing major projects for co-operation with Egypt, commenting: “Friendship relations with Egypt allow the development of partnerships”.

He described ties binding Russia and Egypt as long-standing and historic, hoping to push co-operation between the two countries to new highs.

The Russian president went on to say: “We are in constant contact with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to exchange views on the latest developments in the Middle East region and the current global challenges.

He added that trade volume between Cairo and Moscow has increased by more than 40 per cent in the first half of this year.

A number of Russian firms are implementing large-scale development projects in Egypt, such as the construction of the Dabaa nuclear power plant in Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, 250km west of Alexandria, and the establishment of the Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Russia Today (RT) quoted Putin as telling Egypt’s new envoy in Moscow.

He said Egypt and Russia share identical views concerning issues of mutual interest, according to RT.

On his part, the new Egyptian ambassador praised the solid historical relations between Moscow and Cairo, stressing Egypt’s keenness to establish balanced ties with all countries of the world for the common interest.
